Expert in the use/handling/storing/securing of radiation sources and in the Q/A of machines used in the treatment of cancer patients. Collaborate with physicians and department leaders to assess the technology needs of the department, and commission new technology. Perform required quality checks of treatment plans and create plans to assure that plans meet the requirements of the physician prescription. Maintain department records and perform gap analysis to be assured that department is meeting ACR accreditation standards. Expert in State and Federal regulations for radiation safety program for the hospital.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Oversee development of processes and maintaining documentation to ensure compliance with ACR accreditation standards.
Participates with radiation safety program for Long Beach Memorial Care Center and Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital in order to comply with all State and Federal regulations governing the use, safe storage and handling of radioactive materials. Maintain all required documentation.
Create and/or perform Q/A of patient treatment plans. Ensure that plans conform to physician prescription, and that critical structures are spared from radiation exposure. Follow documentation and billing standard work.
Perform quality assurance checks (daily, monthly, yearly) on department technology as required by State and Federal regulations and prepare required reports. Review calibration data for the Linear Accelerators and HDR on appropriate basis as outlined by AAPM. Perform accurate measurements in machine x-ray beam dosimetry and calibration checks to ensure quality assurance and comply with AAPM/ASTR protocol, Title 17 and Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals.
Commission new technology in the department.
Provide coverage for the HDR, IORT and hyperthermia procedures to comply with the department protocol. Cooperate with the billing office to ensure timely and accurate billing of all procedures.
Provide routine education and training of hospital personnel, physicians, radiation oncology residents, medical physics students, and radiation therapy students to maintain a high level of professionalism and safety.
Perform accurate measurements in machine x-ray beam dosimetry and calibration checks to ensure quality assurance. Comply with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (AAPM/ASTRO) protocol, Title 17 and Joint Commission standards.
