POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Director Clinical Practice and Education, Duke Cancer Network
REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Affiliations, Duke Cancer Network
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Assistant Vice President, Duke Cancer Network Medical Director DCN, Vice President, Network Services
COORDINATES WITH: Directors, team members and providers of the Duke Cancer Network, Duke CEPD, key administrators Network Services, Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University Hospital, Duke University, Duke School of Nursing and external educational companies
Position Summary
To provide consultative support and education for Duke Cancer Network (DCN) affiliated programs in order to maintain clinically relevant oncology nursing standards; develop and facilitate professional education across cancer disciplines to meet the needs of affiliate members and support opportunities for scholarly inquiry. Additionally, support the focus of highlighting Duke faculty and programs,
Scope of Responsibilities: The Director oversees and provides the consultative support focused on quality oncology clinical practice, including development of standards and metrics to measure and monitor performance. The position oversees the coordination of evidenced based clinical practice, education and nursing research initiatives that extend regionally into affiliate communities. Additionally, the Director coordinates the processes for determining educational needs, overseeing strategy in the development and export of local and regional medical, nursing and allied health education program into affiliate communities. This position also oversees the development of educational grant opportunities and implementation of grant funded educational projects.
Job Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Quality
- Planning and Implementation of delivery of quality patient care and educational programming
- Develop, monitor and oversee implementation of strategic clinical practice and educational plans specific to DCN activities at potential and actual affiliated sites including
- Lead efforts to develop and implement clinical plans in support of quality patient care within regulatory guidelines
- Oversee planning and implementation for all CME programs

- Develop strategies with directors to enhance educational efforts for other disciplines
- Assure efforts to develop and maintain clinical and educational policies and procedures and mechanisms for policy implementation are in place
- Collaborate with appropriates resources as indicated such as providers, pharmacy, nursing, lab etc.
- Develop new practices as necessary
- Assist with facility design efforts
- Assist with the assessment of new technology and acquisition of equipment, including vendor selection
- Leads effort to develop PI/QI initiatives at DCN and across DCN sites and oversees, conducts or implements such initiatives
- Utilize nationally available standards and evidenced based practice to develop programs and initiatives which improved patient care and programmatic function
- Assure the completion of written clinical and educational plans and reports for each clinical and program development affiliate site
- Provide mentorship to affiliate staff in the areas of evidenced based practice, nursing education and research
- Assure completion and implementation of planning related to annual and ongoing educational needs assessments
- Performance Monitoring and Reporting
Delivery of quality care at Duke affiliated oncology programs
- Coordinate access to Duke oncology and subspecialty experts in support of the work plan and quality efforts
- Assist with site TJC, CoC and NAPBC or another accreditation and reaccreditation preparedness
- Develop quality oversight reporting structures for all sites
- Oversee and/or lead efforts to develop and assure quality oversight and mechanism for implementing practice change. Oversight to include:
- Physician oversight such as peer review, case reviews and tumor boards
- Participation in sentinel event investigation and reporting
- Registry identification of subspecialty data submission
- Participation in efforts to optimize revenue capture, compliant documentation and coding at program development affiliated sites
- Participate/lead efforts to develop PI/QI initiatives across assigned program
development sites and all clinical affiliations
- Oversee reporting of educational outcomes for each program and the educational efforts for DCN
- Identify areas of improvement and lead team initiatives to implement solutions
Finance
- Program and Strategic Development
- Lead pre-affiliation base line assessment efforts in on-site visit assessments in clinical practice and education
- Participate in the development of the pre-affiliation report and presentation
- Assist with the development of clinical practice and education work plan activities in the startup of any new affiliation
- Give input as to availability of Duke or DCN resources to support affiliation requirements
- Participate in market assessments, feasibility studies, and financial analyses for new affiliates
- Provide input into DCN strategic planning and identify opportunities for new affiliations
- Coordinate ongoing preparation and monitoring systems for quarterly educational productivity and quality reports
- Coordinate work plans for affiliated programs to drive quality metrics and strategic objectives
- Coordinate and or provide education about evidenced based practice
- Collaborate with DCN Directors to develop quality oversight and reporting structures and benchmarks for all DCN sites
- Collaborate with affiliate strategic plan related to clinical practice, clinical education and nursing research
- Oversee development of strategy to enhance participate in in Network educational programs
- Develop and negotiate contracts for assigned Duke Cancer Network educational and grant activities planning and reconciliation of educational program budgets ranging from $10,000 to $2 million dollars
- Communicate needed resources for completion of any educational programs
- Lead effort in research, concept development and submission of educational grants from outside funding sources
- Operations Management
- Lead clinical and educational meetings with affiliate sites
- Develop clinical and educational content and reports and lead presentations for affiliated program steering committees
- Use budgeted resources to assist in the assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of service improvement opportunities
- Develop and monitor DCN revenue and expense budgets for Clinical practice efforts and CME events and the overall clinical endeavor
- Oversee educational and program budgets for each educational and grant activity
- Assure ongoing information related to financial aspects of oncology programing are communicated and evaluated on an ongoing basis at affiliated programs
Work Culture
- Human Resource Management
- Assist in recruitment, hiring and orientation activities for Duke Cancer Network staff
- Directly supervise:
- Associate Directors as assigned but to include Associate Director of clinical Practice and Education and the Associate Director Professional Education and Grants
- Other DCN employees as assigned
- Implement and manage Performance of individual staff and teams
- Assist in development and revision of position descriptions at DCN and for affiliate site oncology staff
- Provide consultative support to affiliate sites in HR matters, to include but not limited to job description design, candidate sourcing, screening, interview, and feedback
- Provide oversight of non-Duke employees in nursing, pharmacy or other positions at various Clinical and Program Development affiliate locations
- Create and support positive team environment internally and within affiliate teams
- Oversee and participate as appropriate in the orientation and ongoing competency validation of staff hired at affiliated programs
- Assure development of orientation programs for new and experienced nursing and pharmacy staff at affiliated programs
- Seek out opportunity to engage self or staff in nursing research
- Professional Educational programs
Oversees development of professional educational programs in consideration of DCN and DCI goals and affiliate educational requirements
- Coordinate annual planning for CME efforts across the network and in conjunction with DCI interests
- Assure ongoing continuing medical nursing and allied health educational needs assessments are completed annually and plans developed to meet the identified needs
- Collaborate with the DCN Associate Director of Clinical Practice and
Education and site leadership to complete annual site needs assessments and development and implementation of annual educational plans and programs
- Oversee planning and implementation of local and regional symposia addressing identified knowledge gaps
- Assure DCN participation in Duke related CME/CNE/CEU programming efforts
- Coordinate access to developmental/educational/training opportunities for affiliated personnel
- Assure that education, including regular CME and CE activities, are in place at DCN sites, as appropriate
- Coordinate and or participate as appropriate in the orientation and
ongoing competency validation of staff hired at affiliated sites
- Assure adequate planning and coordination of Duke research and other network service educational efforts are accomplished and integrated into an overall educational plan
- Assure completion and communication of educational and grant related outcome activities per program and overall per educational and grant related efforts
Customer Service/Relationship Management
- Maintain positive relationships with affiliate and Duke staff and leadership
- Maintain open communication with leaders of the following programs: Affiliations and Network Services Staff, Duke University School of Medicine, Hospital and Health System Clinical practice and education, DUH CSU staff, DHRH and DHR Administration and Medical Staff Leadership, Continuing Medical Education, Nursing, and Community Hospital Leadership
- Lead Service initiatives that anticipate and respond to needs of internal and external customers
- Demonstrate leadership to improve patient/customer access and throughput
- Strive to meet and improve customer satisfaction
Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the ability to respond appropriately in highly public environments, both on and remote to the Duke campus, in high-pressure situations. A person with experience at Duke Health or another academic-based health care delivery system with a Master degree and knowledge of oncology clinical practice standards, nursing research, principles of adult education and CME requirements services is preferred. The position represents the interests of the Duke Cancer Network and Duke Cancer Institute on committees, teams and other public forums and functions within the policies and procedures of Duke University Health System.
Education:
Position requires analytical, organizational and communications skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Master degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration or Health Education is very strongly preferred.
Experience:
Work requires a minimum of five years health care management or clinical experience within the healthcare industry. Experience as a registered nurse, ANP or Clinical leader in oncology very strongly preferred.
- Experience in program management across oncology service lines, including oncology nursing research process and educational processes
- A minimum of three years of progressive supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience and understanding of CME requirements, program planning and coordination is preferred
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
- Certification / licensed to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina preferred. If not licensed, must be eligible for licensure/certification.
- Oncology nursing certification preferred.

- Ability to travel to affiliated sites required (mainly within 4-hour drive, flights on small planes and some regional, national and international travel will be required)

- Evening and weekend educational commitments are required
