The Supervisory Mammography Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist is responsible for the performance of all breast imaging examinations including Quality Assurance, mammography, breast ultrasound, and interventional procedures of the breast. Incumbent provides services in Mammography and supervise staff providing services in mammography and breast ultrasound imaging. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education: Applicants must have completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a quality control technologist, DRT team leader, supervisory radiologic technologist, PACS technologist, clinical program director, or an assistant chief radiologic technologist. Consults with the director of mammography in the evaluation of skill development and quality of work produced by new technologists. Seeks to address performance and conduct issues at an informal level. Maintains documentation pertaining to performance and conduct. Ensures confidentiality of any conversations or actions pertaining to employees. Reports conduct or performance issues to the Chief Technologist. Staff Training: Responsible for the training of new mammography staff, including technologists and support staff; in the performance of procedures specific to that modality and organizational practices of the unit. Collaborates with the Chief Technologist to develop orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Ensures timely completion of all required educational activities. He/she arranges time for the staff to complete TMS and other training activities. Clinic Scheduling: Determines the maximum number of exams which can be performed in a designated time frame, in order to decrease backlog and accommodate emergent examinations. Coordinates with MRI staff to facilitate scheduling of interventional MRI procedures. Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of mammography supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures breast imaging procedure rooms are kept stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Quality Assurance and Accreditation Standards: Perform extensive quality control tests at frequencies required by Public Laws 102-539 and 104-262; by the VHA recognized mammography accreditation body, the American College of Radiology (ACR); as outlined in VHA directives and guidance at defined daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly intervals. Quality control testing must also occur when problems are suspected, and after service or preventive maintenance, in order to maintain ACR accreditation and VHA certification. Tests include but are not limited to film printer quality control, imaging detector disinfection and decontamination, view box illumination and masking evaluation, phantom image analysis, repeat film analysis, and compression analysis. Actively participates in collection of test data related to image quality, dose and half value layer evaluations through the use of breast phantoms requiring clinical images evaluated for positioning, compression, exposure levels, resolution, contrast, noise, exam identification and artifacts. Mammography: Interviews patients for history of previous mammography, breast disease and breast invasive interventions, assesses mammography risk factors and medical history. Provides patient education prior to performing the mammography procedure addressing the patients concern, and promotes the need for periodic patient self-examinations. Obtains images of sufficiently high quality most useful to the interpreting radiologist, the technologist must evaluate the patient body habitus based on the patient's age, size, condition of skin (placing markers if indicated), contravening disabilities and previous breast augmentation or surgeries to determine proper exposure technique settings. The technologist must also evaluate the patient to determine the most effective method communications with the patient.
