The System Engineer I/II is responsible for supporting a scientific community of Data Scientists, Statisticians, Computational Biologists, and Scientific Programmers with complex and frequently changing IT requirements. You will be responsible for tier 1-2 support for HPC systems running Ubuntu Linux. These systems currently consist of application servers hosting research projects, a 7000 core on-premises cluster, and a growing cloud compute. Your duties will encompass configuration and day-to-day support of hardware, operating systems, and applications for HPC/Linux infrastructure on-premises and in the cloud. Job responsibilities also include monitoring and improving server, storage, and network performance. You will join a team of senior engineers and interact with stakeholders from the scientific community and other IT groups at Fred Hutch to identify needs, prioritize and dispatch tickets, as well as develop new projects.
Responsibilities
- Provide customer support for scientific software and scientific computing environment as required
- Lead efforts to improve processes by increasing automation using appropriate tools
- Maintain recipes in Ansible and Chef configuration management system for local and cloud computing solutions
- Proactively identify issues and troubleshoot cloud solutions for Scientific Computing services
- Organize and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
- Maintain end-user documentation including how-to documents and contribute to sciwiki.fredhutch.org
- Use and administer SCM tools
- Conduct training on a variety of topics of expertise for the Scientific Computing team and Fred Hutch scientific community
- Build relationships with other IT professionals at Fred Hutch and educate them about Scientific Computing
- May require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice
- Participate in system monitoring and testing
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
SYSTEMS ENGINEER I MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of system administrator experience in an enterprise with increasing responsibilities
- Daily operational skills and basic scripting using bash or python
- Ability and demonstrated judgement work independently, multitasking, and prioritizing workload
- Demonstrated experience working in a highly collaborative environment
- Demonstrated experience in customer service
SYSTEMS ENGINEER II MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of 3 years managing Linux systems in a networked environment with increasing responsibilities
- Experience in at least one scripting language
- Configuration management experience (chef, puppet, ansible, cfengine, etc.)
- Ability to use and provide support for git, github, and gitlab
- Proven track record researching, implementing and socializing technical solutions
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize workload
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated leadership abilities in driving operational excellence and best practices
- Experience with cluster or workload managers (Moab, Slurm, Torque, SGE)
- Web stack experience (apache, nginx, tomcat, etc.)
- Python and Bash for scripting and tooling
- Linux performance troubleshooting
- Experience using and deploying solutions with Docker
- Experience with Cloud Computing technologies (AWS, Google, Azure)
- Presentation, communication, and public speaking skills
- Analytical, data management, and reporting skills
- Expertise and knowledge of gathering and documenting analytic/reporting requirements
- Experience in a research or educational setting
- Experience with database technologies, particularly Postgres
- Programming, design and system analysis skills
- Pursue continued professional and technical education and training

Systems Engineer I: The annual base salary range for this position is from $84,448.00 to $126,651.20, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
Systems Engineer II: The annual base salary range for this position is from $93,101.00 to $139,630.00, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
